Autumn View watercolor Fall is my favorite time of the year. This colorful scene is near Newfound Gap in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. This is the same view President Franklin D. Roosevelt had during ceremonies when he dedicated the National park to the public in 1940. I used a particularly warm palette, and as much transparent paint as possible to produce the translucent appearance of the leaves. Painting the effect of light coming through the trees required much patience. When asked how he painted such marvelously realistic trees, an artist once replied, "one leaf at a time." |
